Normally we would want to use a Skagit head to Spey cast a heavily weighted, high drag fly, but here's an example of it being done with a very light line, showing that it is primarily a matter of technique.
A lot of people these days are taking two handed rods with them to fish in the surf for striped bass, coho, or other species. We have a choice between buying a switch rod or a beach rod that is designed for casting in the surf. This video covers the differences between the two.
